SHINING LIGHT ON DEATH – A Study day held in Leicester on 21st September 2019 – Part 2- ‘What the Dying want matters’ Rev Andrew Martin
Shining Light on Death, a one-day study day held in Leicester on 21st September 2019, for the caring professions and anyone interested. The aim of the day was to create a greater understanding of the spiritual aspects of dying, death and bereavement.
Guest speakers were Dr Peter Fenwick, a neuropsychiatrist, Rev Andrew Martin, Lead Spiritual Care Chaplain of LOROS Hospice, Leicester, and Maureen Goodman, Programme Director of the Brahma Kumaris, UK.
Introduction to the day ‘…death is clearly something we all have in common. It is absolutely part of the cycle of life and yet we are quite afraid and have anxiety about dying. Most of us don’t know when and how we are going to die. So what role does death play in our lives and how do we feel about it? Maybe it is going to be painful. We also observe the grief of those left behind. It is clear how we have taken death out of our lives and we are a death-denying society. We wish to take the sting out of this and we are going to look at how we can make it more acceptable and a part of life.’
