Community SupportThe hospital has a small but active Nurse Training Centre, which provides an opportunity for local young men and women to train as nurse assistants. This gives them worthwhile employment, helps support their families and allows them to give back into the local community. There are now three separate courses offered; a basic training course for nursing assistants, the Diploma in Ophthalmic Techniques (DOT) and the Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology. The DOT students have proved particularly helpful on the blindness prevention programmes, as they have been trained to screen for cataracts and then refer patients to the hospital for treatment. Also, they speak the local dialect and native patients quickly feel at ease. The hospital, with support from the Janki Foundation, has provided new buildings and facilities for local schools where it also runs nutritional programmes which have brought marked improvements in the children’s health and educational performance. Villages where the nutritional projects run include: Aarna, Achalgarh, Chandela, Jaidra, Jawaingaon and Salgaon. A local mother is employed to cook meals for children at Salgaon village school. Sewing classes for women have given them independence and a source of income. For more information, please visit www.ghrc-abu.com |
